Coronavirus: This Week in the News

1st April 2021

As the UK finally begins to move away from the strictest lockdown measures, we reflect on some of the key news stories this week concerning Coronavirus, with reactions and insights from Private Harley Street Clinic Founder Dr. Mark Ali. Dr Ali is a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon with a degree in Immunology and Molecular Biology.

In the next episode of our interview series, founder of Private Harley Street Clinic Dr. Mark Ali talks about the challenges organisations are facing in getting their staff back to the office, as the UK starts to move away from the strictest lockdown restrictions.

In the news, 5,000 people attend COVID-19 experiment gig in Barcelona, which organisers have called the largest gig in Europe since the pandemic began. All attendees were tested before the event.

Dr Ali, welcomed the news, saying: "This is a harbinger of things to come; the organisers are to be congratulated. It shows how rapid antigen tests can be deployed to bring our society back to enjoying things like music events and sporting events again".

Global leaders call for a pandemic treaty: this week newspapers around the world reported on global leaders jointly calling for a pandemic treaty, arguing that the Covid-19 crisis had posed the “greatest challenge for the global community" in recent times.
Signatories included U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel - the U.S. and China, as well as Russia, were absent.
"Transparency should be a given and all countries should recognise and adhere to this treaty," commented Dr Ali. "We can't say for sure whether better communication between nations could have slowed the spread of the virus, but it must be a prerogative going forward".
