Which countries are currently on the UK’s quarantine list?

In the ever-changing narrative of 2020 and the Covid-19 crisis, many new rules and regulations are being introduced that it’s hard to keep track of what we can and can’t do. Airlines are more than familiar with these twists and turns, and one of their main challenges is communicating the government’s Covid-19 strategy to people who just want to get a holiday in while it’s safe.

Safety comes first, of course. Between increased Covid-19 testing and the enforcement of local lockdowns, our response to the pandemic needs to be connected. By keeping a close eye on Covid-19 infection rates abroad, particularly holiday destinations, our government and all UK airlines can keep us safe by enforcing a quarantine period for travellers.

To help simplify the ever-changing travel restrictions and quarantine requirements, we’ve put together a comprehensive list of countries currently on the UK’s quarantine list and the travel restrictions they are imposing. This will be regularly updated according to Covid-19 rates in the respective countries, as well as the changes to requirements introduced by the government as a result.

What are Covid-19 travel regulations?

Covid-19 travel regulations require you to self-isolate for 14 days when you arrive back in the UK. This applies to UK residents as well as visitors to the UK.

Are there exemptions to these quarantine requirements?

There are some slight exemptions but only very slight, and if this applies to you then all precautions should still be taken.

  • You do not need to self-isolate for 14 days if you are returning from a country that has no current travel restrictions due to the low infection rates in these areas. You can see these countries by scrolling further down the page.
  • You do not need to self-isolate for 14 days if you are returning from domestic travel (for example, returning to England from Scotland, Ireland, Wales or the Isle of Man).
  • You do not need to self-isolate for 14 days if you are returning from British overseas territories.

Countries currently included in the UK’s quarantine list (as of 18th September 2020)

How can I check whether a country I am travelling to or from is on the UK quarantine list?

If you’re thinking of taking a much-needed holiday or you’re planning on travelling for work, simply check in with the list you see above. These destinations are all on the UK’s 14-day quarantine list. The list will change according to the countries’ infection rates, so that you can guarantee the information you’re getting is up to date and relevant.

Why have these restrictions been put in place?

As the World Health Organisation (WHO) and our government track infection rates across the world, decisions are made to place travel restrictions on the locations that show rising infection rates and the highest risk potential for infection.

For each location, there is a total sum of cases, total sum of deaths, the 14-day cumulative number of cases per 100,000 people and the 14-day cumulative number of deaths per 100,000 people. It is the final two that matter most when it comes to deciding which locations should have 14-day self-isolation periods put in place.

Get tested before you go away

Use this information and take extra precautions in order to travel safely and enjoy your time away. To ensure the safety of yourself and of others you come into contact with, consider  ordering one of the Covid-19 test kits from Private Harley Street Clinic, or book an antibody test with one of our medical professionals. Our testing processes are quick and we can also provide double testing if you’re returning to work upon your return.
